Girl's guilt over borrowed cash
This is a really nice story - we had to put on the blog...
A Polish girl racked with guilt over borrowing £13 from a man on holiday in Austria travelled hundreds of miles across Europe to try and return it.
Anna Markowicz, 20, from Krakow, borrowed the cash from a Croatian man when she found she was short of her fare for a train taking her back home from the Austrian capital Vienna last year.
She said: "He told me he was from Zagreb and we agreed I would give it back to him in a coffee shop in Krakow the next day. But I turned up late and he was gone - and I did not have his details.
"I've called thousands of phone numbers and written tons of e-mails since then, but I have not been able to find him. I've even put ads in newspapers and on the internet.
"I thought the only way to track him down was to go to Zagreb. But that didn't work either.
"I just want him to know I keep my promises and will give him the money back. I will not rest easily until then."

'The WFP crisis talks come as the body sees the emergence of a “new area of hunger” in developing countries where even middle-class, urban people are being “priced out of the food market” because of rising food prices.
The warning suggests that the price jump in agricultural commodities – such as wheat, corn, rice and soyabeans – is having a wider impact than thought, hitting countries that have previously largely escaped hunger.

Dear viewers, seeing how this video has become hugely popular I think that is my duty to explain the whole situation.
The first part of the video is happening in a store at Slavija square in Belgrade, Serbia at the time of the torching of a McDonalds restaurant near by, when I by accident recorded these two girls. Two hours later, at Terazije square, I recorded two other girls ("Jesi li nasla broj?"), and shortly after I ran into the blondes from earlier who were emptying a store in Sremska Street. Astonished by their persistence on getting new clothes on a 100% off sale, I decided to further record them.
I would like to thank everyone for their support, and to Albanians, Croatians, Muslims, Germans... Martians and all others who are gloating after this happened, I would like to say that these are only marginal appearances, and that the huge majority of citizens of Serbia are normal and honest people, and I am proud to be one of them.

Dell PCs - Homeland Security Keyloggers
Big Brother is indeed watching you, my friends. Do you have a Dell(God, I hope not) One man found a keylogger connected to the integrated Ethernet board of his Dell PC. He spoke to Dell and wrote to Homeland Security. You'll be amazed by their reply.
He states, " I was opening up my almost brand new Dell 600m laptop, to replace a broken
PCMCIA slot riser on the motherboard. As soon as I got the keyboard off, I
noticed a small cable running from the keyboard connection underneath a piece of
metal protecting the motherboard. I figured "No Big Deal", and continued
with the dissasembly. Being an EE by trade, this piqued my
curiosity considerably. On one side of the board, one Atmel AT45D041A four megabit Flash memory chip."
What could this mean? I called Dell tech support about
it, and they said, and I quote, "The intregrated service tag identifier is there
for assisting customers in the event of lost or misplaced personal information."
He then hung up. A little more research, and I found that that board
spliced in between the keyboard and the ethernet chip is little more than a Keyghost hardware keylogger. I
called the police, as having a keylogger unknown to me in my laptop is a serious
offense. They told me to call the Department of Homeland Security. At this
point, I am in disbelief. Why would the DHS have a keylogger in my laptop? It
was surreal. they told me to submit a Freedom of
Information Act request. This is what I got back:

BRITISH GAS LINKS PROFIT RISE TO MASSIVE PRICE INCREASES
BRITISH Gas has said its 500% increase in profits is the result of charging people much more money to buy gas.
Unveiling its annual results, the company insisted the £480 million profit jump vindicated its strategy of making it a lot more expensive to cook food and keep warm.
Tom Logan, the company's head of external relations, said: "Our senior management team spent 18 months looking at a range of options until someone suggested just putting all the prices up.
"It was a real 'eureka' moment. The finance director was dancing around the boardroom, swigging champagne from the bottle and shouting 'I love gas! I love gas!'. Happy days."
Roy Hobbs, from the Gas Consumers Council, said: "I remember saying to people at the time, I said, 'see all these price increases, yeah? Well that's going to result in much bigger profits for all these companies'.
"I said, 'if they charge you a lot more money for the stuff you are buying, it means they will have a lot more money left over after they have paid all their costs'."
Mr Logan added: "If our customers are unhappy with the current price structure, I would simply remind them that we operate within a free market.
"There is absolutely nothing to prevent them from setting up their own gas company. I suggest they grab a spade."

UK housing market close to collapse
Britain’s housing market is a “house of cards” that is set to implode after years of reckless mortgage lending, chronic oversupply of new flats and widespread fraud, a leading analyst said yesterday.
“We believe it is payback time for years of speculation and sharp practice,” Alastair Stewart, of Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein, said in a note to clients issued at the start of British housebuilders’ results season.
The warning came amid rising fears of endemic fraud in the housing market. The Financial Services Authority (FSA) said yesterday that it had banned a further two mortgage brokers for submitting false applications to lenders, in what appears to be a growing trend.

Gorbachev's Presidio
The Presidio, encompassing 1,480 acres, is almost twice the size of New York's Central Park. QUARTER OF POLICE FACE CONDUCT INQUIRIES
Almost a quarter of Dyfed- Powys Police force's 1,200 police officers have been investigated for allegations of misconduct, corruption or failure in duty in less than a year.
Over about 11 months in 2007, 283 constables, sergeants and inspectors faced a probe by the force's professional standards department (PSD).
The shock figures were revealed after an Evening Post reporter requested details under the Freedom of Information Act.
The revelations have sparked a strong reaction from Llanelli AM Helen Mary Jones, who said the figures were disappointing.
"I am extremely concerned about these findings," she said.
"They not only let down the public, but they let down the many honest police officers who are doing an excellent job in very difficult conditions."
Five of the allegations were so serious that the officers involved tendered their resignation.
The research shows that six of the officers have been under scrutiny for two separate allegations, which brings the total number of accusations handled by the PSD to 289.
Around a third of the investigations were resolved by the PSD or the force division, with a number of others discontinued or found to be unsubstantiated. Some 120 of the inquiries are ongoing.
Female officers were the subject of at least 49 of the allegations, although details on gender were withheld in 30 cases.
Force spokeswoman Eleri Morris said: "To put this figure into context, the 283 officers were either the subject of a public complaint or internal misconduct procedures.
"It needs to be explained that these 283 officers were not all the subject of formal discipline.

Russian threat Nuclear Attack on Ukraine

Russia has threatened to target the Ukraine with nuclear warheads if the former Soviet republic joins Nato and accepts the deployment of United States anti-missile defences on its territory.
I guess that means the Ukraine won't be joining NATO.
President Vladimir Putin of Russia warned Ukraine's leader Viktor Yushchenko of "retaliatory actions" should his country join the Western alliance during a joint press conference in Moscow.
"It's frightening not just to talk about this, but even to think about, that in response to such deployment, the possibility of such deployments - and one can't theoretically exclude these deployments - that Russia will have to point its warheads at Ukrainian territory," he said.
The Russian and Ukrainian leaders had just held emergency talks in the Kremlin to avert a energy supply crisis over Kiev gas bill - a similar dispute two years ago led to power cuts across Europe.

Ghostbusting UK Peterlee
CIVIC bosses paid for a ghostbuster to carry out an exorcism after terrified tenants appealed for help after some spooky goings-on in their home.
District of Easington Council paid £60 towards the psychic's fee after the a frightened family complained about banging from the loft, items flying across rooms and doors slamming in their faces.
Mum Sabrina Fallon called in ghostbuster Suzanne Hadwin after hearing the council would pay half of the £120 bill towards exorcising the house in Basingstoke Road, Peterlee.
While the decision to used taxpayers' money has been criticised, Sabrina, 23, who has lived in the house since June with husband Martin, 24, and daughters Shannon, nine, and 16-month old Amie, says they now love their home and have had no further trouble.
She added: "It's not a waste of money because the council were in there and witnessed what happened.
"It was like ice even with the heating on, it was dull no matter how bright the lights were and there was a horrid smell.
"It was like living in a mortuary."

In November 2000 Mr. Grazinski purchased a brand new 32 foot Winnebago motor home. On his first trip home, having joined the freeway, he set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the drivers seat to go into the back and make himself a cup of coffee. Not surprisingly the Winnie left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Mr. Grazinski sued Winnebago for not advising him in the handbook that he couldn't actually do this. He was awarded $1,750,000 plus a new Winnie. (Winnebago actually changed their handbooks on the back of this court case, just in case there are any other complete morons buying their vehicles.)

In January 2000, Kathleen Robertson of Austin Texas was awarded $780,000.00 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running amuck inside a furniture store. The owners of the store were understandably surprised at the verdict, considering the misbehaving tyke was Ms. Robertson's son.

Chavez 'US oil supply'
It'll help put the price of Oil up. That's what the oil business wants. Ho hum.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has warned that Caracas would stop oil supplies to the US if Exxon Mobil seized the country's assets.
"If you freeze us, if you really manage to freeze us, if you damage us, then we will hurt you. Do you know how? We are not going to send oil to the United States. Take notes, Mr. Bush, Mr. Danger,'' Chavez said.
Exxon Mobil has launched a bid to freeze the assets of Venezuela's state-run oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela SA, in the US, British and Dutch courts.
The move comes after the nationalization of a multibillion dollar oil project by Chavez's government last year.
A British court has issued an injunction freezing as much as US$12 billion in assets.
"The outlaws of Exxon Mobil will never again rob us," Chavez said, accusing the oil giant of acting in line with the policies of 'the imperialist government of the United States' and of being part of the 'international mafia.'
The Venezuelan leader warned that such a move by the US could push oil prices up to $200 a barrel.
That really helps the oil companies, can you imagine them rubbing their hands, lol.

Schools Close Daily
Schools are being shut at the rate of almost one a day, with hundreds axed in rural areas in the past five years.
The full extent of the closures is revealed for the first time in new government figures which show that a total of 1,704 schools have been shut in England since 2002 - an average of 6.6 a week.
Rural counties figure high on the list. Twenty-six schools have been axed in Durham, 58 in Kent, 34 in Lancashire, 33 in Norfolk and 38 in Northamptonshire. Worcestershire has seen the closure of 56 schools, while 33 have closed in Wiltshire.
The disclosure, in figures from the Department for Children, Schools and Families, follows reports of plans to close up to 300 more across the country, many in small villages.
Critics say the Government and local councils are draining the lifeblood of rural communities for short-term savings. Mervyn Benford, a spokesman for the National Association for Small Schools, said: "The loss of a school is often the first or last straw in a chain of events that leads to depopulation and rural decline. Villages are left with older residents and starved of younger people. Without young families, villages are left to a living death. When these schools close, consultation with the local community is a token gesture. Local authorities ride roughshod over their statutory duty."

Bush Plans to Attack Iran
It is virtually impossible to overstate the profligacy of what our government spends on the military. The Department of Defense's planned expenditures for fiscal year 2008 are larger than all other nations' military budgets combined. The supplementary budget to pay for the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, not part of the official defense budget, is itself larger than the combined military budgets of Russia and China. Defense-related spending for fiscal 2008 will exceed $1 trillion for the first time in history. The United States has become the largest single salesman of arms and munitions to other nations on Earth. Leaving out of account President Bush's two on-going wars, defense spending has doubled since the mid-1990s. The defense budget for fiscal 2008 is the largest since World War II.

Princess Dianna Photographer Found Dead with Hole in Head
The photographer accused of helping MI6 to murder Princess Diana was found in a burnt-out BMW with a hole in his head, a court heard today.
James Andanson died after boasting to friends of having secretly taken "explosive" photos of the Paris crash scene, the Diana inquest was told.
The Frenchman owned a white Fiat Uno, which Mohamed Al Fayed claims he used to cause the fatal collision that killed the princess and his son Dodi.
The Harrods boss believes the photographer was planning to go public with his "involvement" in the alleged British secret service plot when his charred body was found in a forest near his home in the South of France in May 2000.
French Investigating officer Jean-Michel Lauzun told the London hearing that he arrived while the vehicle was still ablaze and saw the corpse alight at the steering wheel with a two inch hole in his left temple.
But police concluded that it was a suicide after a pathologist said the hole was due to the intense heat of the fire after he set alight to himself.
High levels of carbon monoxide was also found in his blood, suggesting Andanson was alive inside the fireball long enough to inhale fumes, rather than being killed beforehand.
But Mr Al Fayed's barrister Michael Mansfield QC suggested he may have been attacked before the car was set on fire.
He said: "We just don't know whether it s a case of a man consigning himself to a bizarre and painful death or whether in fact some violence had been meted out to him first."
Four months after the August 1997 crash, Andanson had bragged to friends that he had trailed Diana's Mercedes into the Alma Tunnel where it smashed into a pillar.
Unlike other paparazzi in the chase, he claimed to have been too "cunning" to get rounded up by the police afterwards and escaped arrest.
His photos from the scene were kept hidden in a safe and would cause a furore when they were published, he insisted.
French police were later tipped off about Andanson's claims, but when they interviewed him he produced receipts to show that on the night of the crash he had been in Lignieres, 170 miles to the south of Paris.
And while he had owned a white Fiat Uno, tests showed that paint flecks on the Mercedes could not have come from it.
Mr Al Fayed claims Diana and Dodi were killed on the orders of Prince Philip because she was pregnant with his child and they were planning to marry.
